Scherzo, Italian for joke, usually denotes a short composition of an energetic and humorous character.

Trio Scherzando, Joking Trio, is a short piece comprised of two contrary themes: one lively and oppressive and the other calm and lighthearted.

With these two themes set against each other, Trio Scherzando plays with contrasts and the subversion — or affirmation — of the listener's expectations.

Trio Scherzando was commissioned by Kristina Thede Johansen, Ernst Dánjalsson Remmel and Hjalti Bogason Støylen and was premiered on 11 August 2019 at the Nordic House, Tórshavn, Faroe Islands.
